Cosmetic Hair Treatments Improve Quality of Life in Women with Female Pattern Hair Loss

Hair plays an important role in an individual’s body image, and hair loss can affect self-image, self-esteem and overall quality of life. Especially for women, hair loss can have a severe psychological impact.

The study was designed to examine whether any cosmetic improvements in the appearance of the hair would lead to any changes for the women’s overall quality of life, even if no reversal of the hair loss condition (Female Pattern Hair Loss) would necessarily happen. To assess the quality of life during the period, subjects attended a trichology center. Subjects went to the trichology center every 4-12 weeks over a period of 24 months.

The subjects were guided in lifestyle changes that may help their overall hair condition and given topical products and other treatments. All the women completed the Kingsley Alopecia Profile (KAP) at the first consultation. The questionnaire was completed again after 6 months of cosmetic treatments. KAP is a valid and reliable 38-statement questionnaire that measures the effects of genetic alopecia on quality of life.

The results demonstrated significant overall and subcategory, for example, anxiety, depression, self- esteem and psychosocial, improvements in quality of life after 6 months of treatment. A lower KAP and/or KAP subcategory score indicates the improvement in quality of life.

The effect of hair loss on an individual’s quality of life is often underestimated, but hair loss can have a severe psychological impact and affect the individual’s daily life. The study confirmed that Female Pattern Hair Loss has an effect on the psychosocial and emotional well-being of women and can lead to long-term psychological problems. Therefore, the importance of a type of measurement that can quantify the impact on these women should not be underestimated.

Topical trichology stimulants as well as the supplement Nourkrin®, which is based on a proprietary marine ingredient, as used in this study for the treatment of Female Pattern Hair Loss have been shown to be of great value with respect to hair growth as well as the global improvement of the quality of life.

Conclusion: The participants in the study experienced a significant change in their quality of life after having used Nourkrin® with Marilex®, which has a favourable clinical effect on people with hair loss.
